I used to think cut flowers were frivolous. I always thought they were beautiful, but kinda like that expensive dress that didn't get a lot of wear. Best for special occasions, but probably not the everyday. I was wrong. Flowers hold incredible value and purpose, and they have an emotional super power. Much like a familiar scent or an old song with sentiment, flowers have an unparalleled ability to bring joy, change mood, relieve pain, and provide comfort. They are an expression of life, beauty, vitality, hope and love, and they are a reminder that seasons of life are similar to seasons in nature, and should never be taken for granted. It's amazing how flowers grow after a long winter. They experience extreme challenges (especially here in Manitoba), and yet they grow, bloom, and flourish. What an incredible reminder that there is light and life after every storm. Flowers have the ability to help heal in times of grief, and celebrate joy in times of triumph. Gosh I love flowers.
There's a reason why we choose to have flowers during all the precious moments of life. The birth of a child, a wedding, a graduation, a new job, a funeral, an anniversary... we choose flowers during the good times and during the hard because of their power. God certainly knew what he was doing when he added flowers. They are the sparkle added to the world around us. And whether you choose to grow them or pick them or visit places that do, I encourage you to add more flowers to your life.
I'm not sure I realized the power flowers have to affect me personally until I moved to Vancouver. When I lived out there I had a really tough time with the rain and darkness that winter brought. Something about purchasing flowers and bringing them home instantly affected my mood. I was honestly a better person, more productive, and happier when I was around flowers. Don't even get me started on the emotions that were brought up if I visited tulip fields or a massive dahlia farm. I realize that not every person is this way. But I encourage you to try it ... after all, it's scientific! I'm not kidding though, i did research. Studies have shown that flowers can effect mood long term. People feel less depressed, anxious, and agitated after receiving flowers. In studies people who frequently have flowers demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction, and the presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends. I'm not making this up, flowers have the ability to impact lives.
This is why I no longer think flowers are frivolous. It's why I believe that the everyday flowers are incredibly important. Why I believe that there are few things better than receiving flowers when you're down. It's why my favourite gift to give is flowers, and why I would do so even if I wasn't a flower farmer. Society tells us that flowers are for special occasions... and they are!! But they are not exclusive to those occasions. I'm here to tell you to plant those flowers, purchase that bouquet, visit the park, linger at the flower stand, and reap the rewards of flowers not just on the big day but on the every day. You deserve it!

Next week I'm back to helping you with some flower info, but I decided to take a break from that this week. I've personally been experiencing the power of flowers this week, so I wanted to remind you of their power too!
